On February 21, 2025, Montreal-based pop artist Catherine Jeanne D’Arc debuted her new album “Not Demure.” Offering a bold anthem for women who are unrepentantly themselves, this daring rap/trap song provides a direct antidote to the trend on TikTok called “Very Demure Very Mindful.”
Camp Potéra, a women’s and minority writers’ retreat, was the inspiration for “Not Demure.” Inspired by a challenge from another artist Georgette to tackle the “Very Demure” trend, the creation of the song features Oli Féra’s vocals and SUUNCAAT’s production. Crafting a work that embodies the contrary feeling and honors women who are bold and unafraid to take up room was Catherine’s original response.
Directed by Sabrina Côté, the accompanying music video is a visual banquet reminiscent of 90s rap aesthetics including daring latex garments. This opulent performance matches the song’s theme of going against societal expectations exactly.
Synthpop from the 1980s to the 2000s greatly influences the musical style of Catherine Jeanne D’Arc. Through her strong passion for solving issues she feels strongly about, her projects regularly delve into concepts of feminism and gender fluidity. She highlights her flexibility across a range of artistic genres: by day, an actress; by night, a drag king. For roughly ten years, Catherine has been a dynamic presence in the music scene of Montreal as the main lead vocalist and songwriter of the feminist punk/rock band Chârogne.
Her first solo track, “Comme les garçons,” was released in 2022; it quickly rose to 10th place on Stingray Music in just ten days and was recognized by Sirius XM as “Hope 2022.” Her later single, “Ode au Coming Out,” honored gender fluidity and many sexual orientations and inspired people going through coming out trips. The 2023 release of “SarahAnne” further legitimized her presence in the music world as one of Spotify’s respected “The Eh! List” selected by Exclaim, spotlighting top Canadian songs.
Catherine Jeanne Darc’s performances are based on theatrics. Her elegantly planned stage appearance and extravagant attire set her performances apart. Her performances, which leave lasting marks, have been featured since 2022 on stages at Coup de cœur francophone and Maison de la culture Maisonneuve, among other sites.
Along with two published plays—“; Gédailles “ and “ L’enclos “—Catherine is a UQAM Theater School graduate and Cégeprep MarieVictorin alumna in literary creation and jazz singing.
