A Florida judge has made the decision to remove one prosecutor from the double murder case of rapper YNW Melly. The judge’s ruling came ahead of jury selection for Melly’s retrial. YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, is accused of killing his two friends in 2018.
The defense team successfully convinced Judge John Murphy to remove Assistant State Attorney Kristine Bradley from the case. The judge cited the possibility of Bradley being called as a witness in the upcoming retrial as the reason for her removal.
Last month, YNW Melly’s lawyers accused the Broward County State Attorney’s Office of prosecutorial misconduct. They claimed that prosecutors had withheld evidence related to Detective Mark Moretti, the lead investigator in the murder case. The defense team had hoped to have the case dismissed entirely due to these allegations.
However, Judge Murphy found no evidence of a cover-up involving State Attorney Harold Pryor and two deputies, and therefore denied the defense’s bid for dismissal. As a result, prosecutors were left scrambling to replace Bradley ahead of jury selection.
YNW Melly’s retrial was scheduled to begin on October 9th, but had to be delayed as Judge Murphy needed more time to address the multiple motions filed in the case. The rapper is now awaiting jury selection for his retrial.
