With over 80k monthly listeners on Spotify and a brand-new track dropping every single month, independent rapper Edd Stark is a force to be reckoned with. To celebrate the launch of his striking new single “Build,” we grabbed some time with the St. Paul creator. From hiding burnt DMX CDs as a kid to engineering his tracks around lyric-first blueprints, Edd opens up about his sonic world in this exclusive interview.
Independent hip-hop artist Edd Stark is solidifying his lane in the underground rap scene with his hard-hitting new single, “Build.” Dropping on August 28 under his own independent label, 107 Studios, the Saint Paul, Minnesota native delivers a masterful track that pairs raw, street-level reality with dark, metaphysical themes. Avoiding fleeting mainstream trends, Stark proves once again why his digital-first strategy keeps a loyal fanbase coming back for more.

Production-wise, the track also does a good job of handling its low-end frequencies. The kick and bass have a clean, punchy weight without getting in the way of the overall sonic space or overpowering the mix. The rhythm section has a steady cadence that lays the foundation, and the ambient layers around it create a delicate, metaphysical vibe. Also, the cover art and sound are in perfect harmony, which makes the album sound completely and authentically underground rap.

He is a first class storyteller who doesn’t hesitate to mix heavy street realities with deep cosmic and spiritual themes. Whether he’s writing lyrics in the back of his truck or creating cinematic soundscapes within 107 Studios, everything Edd works on feels authentic, dark and purposefully so.
We sat down with the visionary artist to pull back the curtain on his metaphysical concepts, his unique creative process inside his truck, and how fatherhood fuels his unstoppable drive. Check out the full Q&A below:
Q: How would you describe your sound to someone discovering Edd Stark for the first time?
A: I’ve been told I have a unique rap voice, so once you tap, you’ll instantly recognize me on every song, kinda like a Lil Wayne. Think aggressive delivery with a raspy voice to match, like The Game, and detailed lyricism, like a Jadakiss. My music is deeply personal, so even though I’m heavy on the spiritual vibes, we’re talking very street, graphic storytelling focused on a self-made, do-better type of mentality. The message is positive but dark, and the production is definitely dark and bass-heavy. Edd Stark beats tend to sound very cinematic, like movie soundtracks or video game vibes. Maybe Salt Bae a lil Electronic music influence on top cuz Edd Stark likes to fist pump too!
Q: What usually sparks your creativity when you’re in the studio?
A: The spark actually happens outside the stu. I write almost exclusively while I’m driving and listening to the beat in my truck. I talk-to-text the lyrics and fix em up from typos once I stop moving. It goes life, then songwriting, then instrumentation last. And it’s not hard for me to get inspired. Whatever sci-fi I’m currently into, girls, personal failure, wealth building, magic—I’m inspired by everything.
Q: Who are your biggest musical influences?
A: Historically it was Snoop, Em, and DMX, RIP! As a shorty I had burnt CDs and had to hide them from my mom and aunties lol. I’ve been on a big Money Man kick lately. Tech N9ne, A Boogie, Icewear Vezzo, Tee Grizzley, Moneybagg. I’m also into wave and melodic trap, but electronic music is new for me, so I’m still learning the scene. Tim Schaufert and CASHFORGOLD are dope too.
Q: How do you usually start a new track?
A: Always songwriting. First I receive the words, and then I look for a beat that matches it, usually based on tempo and mood. Or sometimes I can’t find the right vibe so I hit my producer with the lyrics, and he’ll build the instrumentation around the lyrics.
Q: What can fans look out for next from you?
A: “Build” is the first single from my upcoming project “Stark Realities III” the third and final installment in the Stark Realities trilogy. You’re getting a new song every month until the full album drops later this year. I’ve been releasing one new song a month every month for awhile now and plan to keep that pace forever.
Q: Outside of music, what part of your everyday life or background secretly fuels your creativity the most?
A: Nadya, my daughter. She’s 6 now. She’s my whole world, and fatherhood has been the primary driver in everything I do since she was born, but especially in the music. Nothing motivates you like being a parent.
