Séhkou, incognito poet, songwriter, and independent hip-hop artist, continues the unfolding story of his ambitious SOLUS project with the release of “John 11:38-44 (Lazarus).” The track was independently released under Silent Psalm Productions and is a gritty, spiritually charged meditation on endurance, transformation, and the unseen hands that guide a life through darkness. Séhkou uses the biblical story of Lazarus being called forth from the tomb as a point of departure to focus thematically on something elemental: sheer survival.
A Blueprint for Modern Transformation from Scripture
Séhkou doesn’t give a literal retelling of the biblical text. Instead, he uses the Lazarus story as a large canvas to explore bigger themes of death and resurrection—lost identity, obscurity, deep struggle, and the long process of emerging from what once felt like a permanent situation. The song follows a character moving through hardship, not entirely sure of the destination, based on three tightly-woven 12-bar verses and the hauntingly repeated refrain, “He kept goin… not knowin…” A gritty story of perseverance slowly becomes a deep meditation on providence and the potter’s house, framing suffering not as an endpoint, but as active spiritual formation.
Guest vocalist Jamila Thompson’s soulful performance gives Séhkou’s dense lyrics the emotional depth they need, perfectly balancing the track’s dense, deliberate writing.
