Brady, your musical journey from a small town in Rhode Island to Los Angeles for college seems to have influenced your music significantly, culminating in your latest single ‘Underground.’ Could you share how your upbringing shaped your musical style, the pivotal experiences during your transition to LA that inspired your EP ‘Ladybug,’ and how personal growth between releases influenced the distinct sound of ‘Underground’? Additionally, could you elaborate on the influences behind the song’s instrumental elements, the story behind the lyrics derived from a night out in Hollywood, and your intention of encouraging listeners to embrace their unique aspects through this song while maintaining authenticity in your music to connect with your audience on a deeper level?
Early Musical Journey
I have been writing music for as long as I can remember. Now, at 20 years old, I am able to focus my energy on releasing the music I have spent so much time creating. I grew up in a small town in Rhode Island and moved to Los Angeles for college. The transition inspired me to write my first EP, Ladybug. I think I was able to really develop a strong sense of self, and I channeled this into my music.
The Story Behind “Underground
“Underground” is my first single since that EP, and it is so different than the music I have released in the past. I believe this is because I have changed so much as a person in the year between these releases. While writing “Underground,” I was inspired by my ability to relate to others while also standing by what makes me my own person.
The instrumental was influenced by music my friends had shown me during my second year of college. I never thought I could make something groovy and upbeat that was also true to my creative self. Taking inspiration from this music in a way that felt authentic to me was something I had to really focus on, and I am beyond proud of the result.
The lyrics of “Underground” are based on a night out with some new friends. We were out in Hollywood, and I was explaining how having crazy nights out brings up a lot of anxiety for me. This is something I had told my friends back home a while ago, but they judged me for it. These new friends validated how I was feeling, assuring me that preferring to stay in doesn’t make me less of a “fun young person.” In that moment, I felt at peace with the little things that make me an individual.
Connecting Through Music
It led me to write “Underground,” which highlights the beauty in things that make you uncomfortable or embarrassed. In reality, those are the things that make a person unique. I appreciate my ability to be genuine in my music because I think it really allows me to connect with people in a way I never could before. I hope that others can listen to “Underground” and accept the aspects of themselves they might see as flaws because all they really are are aspects! In my opinion, that is something to celebrate.
Brady Lyons’ “Underground” is a standout single that showcases his talent as both a singer and songwriter. The fusion of Funk, Soul, and Pop creates a sound that is fresh and exciting. The lyrics are thought-provoking and inspire listeners to embrace their true selves. With its infectious beats and captivating vocals, “Underground” is a song that will leave you wanting more.
