New York-based, Montreal-raised dream pop artist James Tonic has released his new single “Wherever You Are.” The song is the first of a series of four singles to be released weekly through Oct. 1. With a catalog that has garnered more than 25 million streams in 238 territories and videos featuring his music drawing nearly one billion views, Tonic continues to expand his enormous digital presence.
“Wherever You Are” is an alternative pop song with a foundation of piano, strings, and synthesizers. To avoid the fully programmed electronic production, the single was recorded with a live band for a more organic sound. Thematically, it’s about the idea of a relationship that never happened, and the emotional weight is anchored on the central lyric: “I could have been your safety; just pretend you need me.” The sonic profile is stylistically similar to artists such as Cigarets After Sex, Lana Del Rey, and The Weeknd.
James Tonic Announces Winter Theater Tour
The release comes after a successful commercial run for Tonic, whose 2024 record Stuck In LA sold out its West Coast tour, followed by his 2025 album Safety and January 2026 release Safety II. His last two albums have combined for more than 2.2 million streams in less than five months. To support his expanding catalog, Tonic will hit the road this winter with the Safety Tour, running November 2026 through February 2027. The tour is a staged musical in the dream-pop genre and will be performed in more than 15 North American cities in intimate, seated theaters.
